A Note on the Ensemble

Founded in Thanjavur and now resident in Chennai, the Kaveri Ensemble carries a kutcheri tradition three generations deep. Meenakshi Venkataraman learned at her grandmother's harmonium before entering the gurukulam of Vidwan K. S. Rajagopalan; Arjun Seshadri and R. Bhargav joined her in 2014, and the trio has kept an unbroken December-season calendar ever since.

Their concerts favour the long form — a full alapana given room to breathe, neraval taken phrase by phrase, and a tani avartanam that converses rather than competes. Rasikas will find the old Thanjavur bani intact: weight in the lower octave, ornament only where the raga asks for it.

An ensemble that treats silence as a fourth instrument. The old Thanjavur weight, carried lightly.
